About State and Private Maritime Academies

In addition to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, New York, merchant marine officers are also trained in the United States at five state and privately-operated maritime colleges, accredited by the Maritime Administration and the Coast Guard. Those for which we have been able to find flags are shown below.

Great Lakes Maritime Academy

The Great Lakes Maritime Academy, located at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan, was established in 1969. The academy flag is flown aboard the academy's training ship, T/S State of Michigan.

Maine Maritime Academy

Maine Maritime Academy was founded in 1941 and is located at Castine. It has some 900 students. This color with the academy's emblem in full color on a blue field, is carried on parade by the Regiment of Midshipmen.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Mass Maritime, at Buzzards Bay, was established by the General Court of Massachusetts in 1891. The Regiment of Cadets, now numbering some 1,400, carries this blue regimental color bearing the academy seal.

State University of New York Maritime College

Founded in 1874 and formerly known as the New York State Merchant Marine Academy, SUNY Maritime (located at Throgg's Neck) is the country's oldest institution for the education and training of merchant marine officers. It became part of the State University of New York system in 1948.(Image courtesy of Cadet Trevor Webb.)
